In the name of God

Um dia, ainda de guerra, um árabe de entre os maiores, foi ao coração do inimigo dizer isto:

In the name of God...
I come to you today on solid ground to shape a new life and to establish peace.
No one could have ever conceived that the president of the biggest Arab state, should declare his readiness to go to the land of the adversary while we were still in a state of war.
We all still bear the consequences of four fierce wars waged within 30 years.

Any life that is lost in war is a human life be it that of an Arab or an Israeli.
A wife who becomes a widow is a human being entitled to a happy family life, whether she be an Arab or an Israeli.
Innocent children who are deprived of the care and compassion of their parents are ours.
They are ours, be they living on Arab or Israeli land.
They command our full responsibility to afford them a comfortable life today and tomorrow.
For the sake of them all, for the sake of the lives of all our sons and brothers, for all that I have taken my decision to come to you, despite all the hazards, to deliver my address.

No ano seguinte foi prémio Nobel da Paz (com Menachem Begin);
E no dia 6 de Outubro de 1981 foi assassinado pela Jihad.
Comparem-se as palavras corajosas que pronunciou com as do hoje, presidente do Irão.
A Paz permanente assenta sobre a Justiça.
Ser justo não será condenar o povo palestino ao degredo na sua própria terra.
Ser justo também não será varrer Israel do mapa.

Há palavras de guerra e há palavras de paz.
Há mal e há bem.
Confundem-se, distinguem-se com dificuldade, mas há momentos especiais em que se tornam evidentes...
momentos limite entre a vida e a morte...
aí, nessa claridade rara, vê-se muito bem quem é quem.

É se a igreja católica lê-se este apelo à paz na missa de domingo?
E se os nossos filhos tivessem acesso a ele nos manuais da catequese? Nos manuais da escola?

Onde posso ter acesso ao discurso na totalidade?
